Swine or just another beast?

So, it has come to this. After hearing the stats for weeks, we have become one. My oldest son’s class had eight kids out on Thursday. The eighth grade had 13. Swine is the new lice. It’s fast, it’s furious, but how do you know? With lice, it’s easy: see bugs, buy shampoo, blow your dryers’ heating element debugging all your linens and move on. Sure you have sympathy itching for a week or so, but you know how to chart your course. This flu is clearly blazing a new path. No two kids are sick the exact same way. Some have fever and cough, some vomit with no cough, some just have fever. Your doctor doesn’t want to see you and the blue mask actually coordinates with our uniform colors so you barely notice getting sent home wearing one. So my 11 year old rolls around on the couch exhibiting every possible combination of symptoms because he is a classic overachiever. We don’t know if it is H1N1, but it is an ugly breed nonetheless. And we wait. Wait for him to feel better. Wait for the other two boys to succumb. And wait as my sanity becomes as elusive as that pesky fever.
